Supreme Commander! Zug and Oizys have had a chance to blow each other up enough to give a weeks worth of impressions. The game is bigger and more fun then we thought possible. We have MMO on the brain this week as well. We pick apart WoW, with it’s recent expansions and arena implementation, what the game thinks it is, what the game really is, and what the game wants to be. Other topics include: PVP vs PVE, and riding Harleys while sewing. We balance out the convo with some talks about Warhammer Online, and the unveiling of it’s Realm vs. Realm concepts. We did up oldie-but-goodie MMOs like Ultima Online, Shadowbane, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, EVE online…. pant pant pant. We put on our thinking-man and geeking-man hats for this episode, so bwaiR!~`1

WoW: Arena System Info!

Having been a week or two into the throes of the new Arena system, I’ve done a bit of research on some mechanics. This is partly because of my interest, and partly because it’s not been as well documented on the official site yet. Since I found that I’ve been answering a lot of questions on this subject, I’ll share some info I’ve gathered and some things that I’ve learned.

YouTube - Warhammer Online - RvR explaination final

With World of Warcraft having recently launched it’s new expansion (which includes a new and exciting Arena System,) Warhammer Online has picked a good time to release the specifics of it’s RvR (Realm vs Realm) combat system. It draws from some game elements of the Dark Age of Camelot system, while learning from some of the shortcomings of WoW’s PVP system, and then wraps it up nicely with some original concepts.

I think it will feed the hungry soul of anyone disenfranchised with the match-up PvP nature of WoW, or old fans of DAoC. While WoW has attempted to match DAoC’s concept of capturing outdoor targets, it hasn’t, in my opinion, surpassed it; the benefits you get from the outdoor objectives in WoW are helpful, but not to the scale that the DAoC (and soon to be WAR’s) objectives will give.

This kind of stuff keeps me chair-dancing all day. It’s a little Stomp, mixed with Blue Man Group. Sprinkle Headcrabs to taste. Serve on G-Mans briefcase.

Yay for Shoko-tan!

Life as a WoW GM

An interesting interview with someone who was formerly a Blizzard GM for World of Warcraft. One particular point of interest: GMs have to take the threat of player suicide seriously, and be prepared to take action. He comments:

(As an aside, my lead had some fun stories on this. Try explaining to a gruff, middle-aged, ex-marine police seargent that some 12 year old is going to kill himself because he got a blue instead of a purple-colored virtual item. And that he’s paying your company for the privilege.)

Grats to Xia the spinny-braids Paladin on hitting 70 in World of Warcraft this weekend. Having finally taken care of that step, I treated myself to a few hours of hardcore horde-smashing. I’ve also been invited to a 5v5 bracket team, hereby known as Zugz Thugz. Along with some theorycrafting and observations, here’s my first impressions of the Arena system, and the future of PVP in The Burning Crusade.
