Last night I was at Wumpskate and someone asked me for an EGR flyer. Turns out it was Cory of Neoramen and Xenocanon fame!
We talked a lot about old video games, TG-16, games with awesome sound, Arcade Infinity, and Herzog Zwei (ya!). I was a fan of Neoramen back when it was Pockybot - it’s always awesome to meet up with people from The Internets. At the same time, however, it’s a bit like… “what are you doing here in the real world?”

We had a good time at Wizard World. Even with it being somewhat of a small con, we tend to bring the fun with us so it always works out.
The tournaments and the artist alley were definitely the highlights of the con. Special shout-out to Chrissy from Dim Sum Yum who I swear is stalking us.
Awesomeness pics and video after the jump

Maybe this one is specific to the west coast or to SoCal, but I’ve noticed an alarming trend. About 60-70% of the grocery stores I go into have one (and only one) checkout clerk who reminds me of Dan Aykroyd in mannerism if not in physicality. They usually are good at the quick smile and shallow witticism, but you can tell they’ve told a joke or two in their time. Is this the fallback career for the Laugh Factory contestants? I’m not sure, but I figured it was as poignant a scientific assertion as any. And like a good theory, I get to name it.
I’m going to call it the TGIF theory for Think Grocer Is Friday. Of course the real reason I’m doing this is there is a definitive lack of good google links from the words ‘grocer’ and ‘friday’, so I figured if there’s anything I can trump it’s this. Hey at least this post won’t serve to increase our google index on “but I poop from there“. Or will it?

I’m glad to see someone agrees with me about the failures of GDC as a whole to properly see “what’s up”. And that someone is Joi Ito, who presented a good monologue about what we’re missing with all this CliffyBism. Yes, I have made that a word.

The Game Developer’s Choice awards happened last night with mostly predictable results.
I’m very happy about the IGF selections, but I would probably have been pretty happy regardless of the choice as they are all quite amazing games. Special gratz out to Tom Fulp for bagging the Excellence in Visual Arts and the Audience awards for Castle Crashers.
However, I don’t feel the same love and reverie for the GDC awards. Don’t get me wrong, the nominees are all good games, and this award ceremony still holds far more of my respect than all the Spike TV awards in the world combined. Just this once, though, it feels that the forward thinking world of video game developers and press are lagging behind the mainstream now by what feels like at least a year plus.

Holy crap, hahaha
I just finished watching the first episode of the new anime Master of Epic.
It is basically a theatre of MMO (and many WoW-specific) in-jokes that only someone who plays would really get.
Some examples:
- There’s a young girl (played by a boy) named Collon, who has to go get some spider silk for a quest.
- There’s someone yelling out for a rez (’rizu’).
- There’s a knight who kills a dragon to eat dragon steak.
- A bandage that when wrapped, miraculously, all the wounds go away (and the clothes reform).
- When enemies die they disappear and turn into a bag of loot
- Someone’s giant elephant pet blocks the door to one place in town and no one can go through the door.
- Two characters fishing off a pier.
- A public service announcement to beward of great white sharks (suck my diiiiiiick) when fishing
- There’s a tiny warlock girl who is hungry so she eats her bat-summon (it’s described as a sacrifice move that regains hp and mana) - but it’s apparently terrifying to watch.
- A bunch of emotes are shown and then explained (including dance, cheer, etc) including the message bubbles above that says “boss dances”
- Someone needs seaweed for a quest they’re on and they have to go to another area for it (their quest is to make norimaki, because they’re a chef).
- “but if we get defeated that’s it. Two of our items will be taken away” (by the other faction)
- A five-color all girl gnome sentai team saves two characters from being ganked/robbed (one of them turns into a feral-type form to do this - gnome druids?) …(anyone want to form a waragecha five guild?)
- A big mouse is described as ‘easy for beginners to hunt’
Glad to see we’re way past the time when this can’t be considered ‘mainstream entertainment’. Most of it isn’t really even that ‘funny’, though I am curious as to how many years until the ’situation comedy’ distinctions wear off and it just becomes another sitcom genre like ‘guy with only women in family/household’.
