Advertality

As a lover of advertising and new media, this interactive advertisement for Blue Dragon absolutely floored me. Not only the idea and execution of it, but the technology and web tracking about this. If I were to go back to college, this type of thing would be my thesis.

It just won the Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for the Outdoor category so I’m glad this kind of genius is being recognized.

In other advertising news, Sony knocks it out of the park with this so-tasteless-it’s-awesome ad campaign in India:
Number 1
Number 2

Wow guys, just… wow.

Lastly, Zug and I were discussing this guy and phenomenon today. It seems to be a very southern california thing… these guys start off just bored and then turned it into a sport. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it covered on some of those ’soo urban’ sports TV shows. That and I’ve seen dudes totally mess up and wipe, but I haven’t ever seen a bystander get gouged yet - I’m sure it has happened though. We need a character like this in Open Mortal

GDC Awards And YOU

The Game Developer’s Choice awards happened last night with mostly predictable results.

I’m very happy about the IGF selections, but I would probably have been pretty happy regardless of the choice as they are all quite amazing games. Special gratz out to Tom Fulp for bagging the Excellence in Visual Arts and the Audience awards for Castle Crashers.

However, I don’t feel the same love and reverie for the GDC awards. Don’t get me wrong, the nominees are all good games, and this award ceremony still holds far more of my respect than all the Spike TV awards in the world combined. Just this once, though, it feels that the forward thinking world of video game developers and press are lagging behind the mainstream now by what feels like at least a year plus.

WiYGN is all about my ideal awards show tonight. The types of awards, the house band, who presents, who wins and so on. This is the episode you want to tune in for if you think Spike TV and G4 are doing it wrong.

Check out the Japan Media Arts Festival award winners for this year. Lot’s of great entries this year including Okami, Yotsuba&! and PIKA PIKA amongst others. There really needs to be more of these non-industry type awards for artistic awesome given. I’m really getting a bit tired of the industry-based awards ceremasterbamony.

Woman Killed In Wii-Related Competition

A woman of there kids dies of OD’ing on water. She dies because she was competing in a radio show contest, “Hold your Wee for a Wii.” It’s really sad because she was a mother of three, and was probably participating in the contest for that reason. Couldn’t she just bought a PS3? Nah.

Yeah, I know you’re probably thinking “Uh, Nintendo?”, but you gotta remember one thing. The Emmys have given more awards to Frasier than any other show. I’m not gonna take offense to this, as it’s just another entry into the annals of the Emmy Award Hall of Lame.

Yet another countdown, what do you think?  This one is pretty complete, and it’s annoying that you can’t jump right to the front, you have to go through each page.  I’m glad indy stuff like Defcon:Everybody Dies made it on the list.  I do agree loosely with the top 10 as well, so I STAND BEHIND THIS LIST OF AWESOME.

Burger King Games Go Double Platinum

Double Platinum, that’s insane.  Some games never even make it to double platinum.  It’s interesting that they are grouping the total sales of all three of the games together.  I think it’s fair, though, because they are pretty much a package deal and a steal for 10$ for all three of them.  Grats, King.
