Comicon, uWink and Blizzcon. We had adventures at Comicon, in the expo hall and at the Masquerade. Zug hit up uWink, the ‘Chuck-e-Cheez for Adults,’ and gives a run-down of his adventures there, including an animated gif dance party. Blizzcon is hitting in a day or two, so we list off all the rumors, including our own bets. New WoW expansion is Northrend? New race in Starcraft 2? Diablo 3? We’ll find out Friday! CRAZY CONVENTION ZERG KEKEKE

In preparing for the Winnebago that is Comic-Con this weekend, we are donning our respective Geek Armor and getting pumped up while talking about the other upcoming conventions Blizzcon and Penny Arcade Expo. More info has come out recently about TerraDrive - a LARP/Paper Roleplaying game that will be debuting at PAX and we discuss our first impressions, a little bit of the WoW talk sneaks in under the guise of pre-Blizzcon speculation, and much reminiscing is done about Comic Con past and future (future reminiscing? - yes) and what it means to gamers in a post-E3 world. We wrap it up with some discussion of masters of marketing like Pokemon, constantly showing us how it’s done, and some frank statistics on in-game advertisements now that the science is coming of age. Also we say “Chocolate Rain” a lot.

Zug has had a tradition - nay a ritual - of beginning every hotel-stay-period related to a convention or conference with the placement of his own unique gargoyle by the entranceway of the room in question - usually affixed to a mirror using specially designed hotel-mirror-optimized suction cups. This gargoyle has, as far as I am aware, always taken the form of Pikachu the destroyer (”Raaaaaaayyyyy….”) with proper SARS protection befitting such a heavy responsibility. This year we also had pokeballs with flying pikachus and even a full sized live-in Mudkip (yes you heard correctly that we like them).

You can see the gargoyle in the background.

Well it seems someone shares our love for the motif

Conventions on the brain. We’re deep in the trenches of ‘convention high season,’ having just been to Anime Expo, getting buzzed by E3, and now waiting for Comicon and Blizzcon. We give a bit of an E3 wrap up, going through some of the things that jumped out at us since last show, as well as a few stories and experiences from past Anime Expos. We discuss conventions in general, and then ponder about Anime licensing and the business models. Lastly, we take five and flex our game development muscles, and come up with some ideas for a game based around Conventions.

A quick news rundown of the week. Games Based On Movies: IMDB has a category that you can check out and stay abreast. Jack Thompson is (finally) getting sued. Exclamation Warriors lets you yell at your DS while you play a River City Ransom-like game. Multiboxing in MMOs for fun and profit: play your favorite MMO on 5 or more computers. Also, E3 IS HERE! We’re not there, because it’s invitation-only and we’re not invited. But we’ll tell you about it anyway! Lastly but not leastly, this weekend we went to the most amazing RPG-Themed birthday ever, and we’ll tell you about it.

HAPPY 4th of JULY!

This episode is a quick con-report from Anime Expo 2007. We go over all the adventures we had, with Xenon, alcohol, dances, cosplay, Elite Beat Agents, and more. Next year the Con is at The LA Convention center, and that scares us. We got some great pictures and video which we’ll get up ASAP!

THE ANIME EXPO EDITION! We are prepared for the Anime Expo adventures. We discuss some of the stranger things happening this con, like how there’s a Rocky Horror movie showing, as well as an advanced screening of the Transformers movie. We quickly talk about Elite Beat Agents, how fun it is, and how we’re going to be them. Oizys gets some Pokemon Coliseum, Pokemons, let me show you them. If you’re going to AX, let us know!

Anime Expo is coming soon, and they are deploying transvestite robots! Not really, but they are showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show and a advanced screening of the Transformers movie? That’s not very animoo or Japanese? Or is it? Oizys talks at length about Odin Sphere, and a revelation he came up with; it’s River City Ransom on crack. In addition to all the similarities, it also has some pretty engrossing. Plundr, a new DS game uses some awesome wifi hax to make a game based off the trade and pillaging of pirate life. Moving around in reality simulates movement in the game, where your physical location determines where you are in relationship to islands and other pirates. From the makers of Heroclix comes Haloclix. The world is not ready. We visit Supreme Commander again, because of the new patch. We talk about big real-world-influenced maps and how they change the game.

For our 3rd Birthiversary as a show, we talk about cooperative gaming and how it makes for the most memorable experiences. “Sequels only by name” are contrasted to “sequels in spirit”, and a couple examples of this are shown. All in all, we make lots of furry references as we bring out examples like Shining (in the Darkness/Force/Tears/etc), which is many times over a sequel only in name, while games like Etrian Odyssey and Yggdra Union continue in spirit. (Secret/*) of Mana is also dogged for letting go of multiplayer in the new Dawn of Mana, but we also discuss when a single player only game is more appropriate. Many a Red Stripe is consumed in the making of this show and much reminiscing (with sound clips!) and lols.

More people are getting into trouble for designing making FPS game maps of their school; we find an excellent point. You draw/design/create what you know best. Live gaming tournament at a big movie theater out here, we might check it out. Torturing kids at home and at school for bad and bad. Simpsons - The game is coming out and it’s going to be huge. We discuss the Simpson games over the ages! Lastly, we’re hitting up the Southn California Classic Collectors meetup. Lots of arcade cabinets, Tron playing on the screen.
