Team fortress classic 2 video rules, and we say why. It’s not just polish, it’s personality. What games have polish vs. personality? Blank slate toughguy characterization is getting old, we like to see depth. Granted, the Heavy Weapons Guy is a meathead, but we have bromance for him. Also, we mention the Wilhelmscream. Look it up on google for a lol! Halo 3 beta problems, they launched and had some big problems, the community is pissed. Warcraft announces some new innovations in their game, coming soon; guild banks and in-game voice comms. warcraft innovations - guild banks, voice comms; what will the implimentation of both of these things do to the game? Google buys a major in-game ad tech recently, and is going to patent a new tech that does psychological profiling to help serve ads. Creepy? A little.

Having been a week or two into the throes of the new Arena system, I’ve done a bit of research on some mechanics. This is partly because of my interest, and partly because it’s not been as well documented on the official site yet. Since I found that I’ve been answering a lot of questions on this subject, I’ll share some info I’ve gathered and some things that I’ve learned.

YouTube - Warhammer Online - RvR explaination final

With World of Warcraft having recently launched it’s new expansion (which includes a new and exciting Arena System,) Warhammer Online has picked a good time to release the specifics of it’s RvR (Realm vs Realm) combat system. It draws from some game elements of the Dark Age of Camelot system, while learning from some of the shortcomings of WoW’s PVP system, and then wraps it up nicely with some original concepts.

I think it will feed the hungry soul of anyone disenfranchised with the match-up PvP nature of WoW, or old fans of DAoC. While WoW has attempted to match DAoC’s concept of capturing outdoor targets, it hasn’t, in my opinion, surpassed it; the benefits you get from the outdoor objectives in WoW are helpful, but not to the scale that the DAoC (and soon to be WAR’s) objectives will give.

Life as a WoW GM

An interesting interview with someone who was formerly a Blizzard GM for World of Warcraft. One particular point of interest: GMs have to take the threat of player suicide seriously, and be prepared to take action. He comments:

(As an aside, my lead had some fun stories on this. Try explaining to a gruff, middle-aged, ex-marine police seargent that some 12 year old is going to kill himself because he got a blue instead of a purple-colored virtual item. And that he’s paying your company for the privilege.)

Grats to Xia the spinny-braids Paladin on hitting 70 in World of Warcraft this weekend. Having finally taken care of that step, I treated myself to a few hours of hardcore horde-smashing. I’ve also been invited to a 5v5 bracket team, hereby known as Zugz Thugz. Along with some theorycrafting and observations, here’s my first impressions of the Arena system, and the future of PVP in The Burning Crusade.

This week, we do a run-down of some recent news in the bloggery-land. Stuff like the re-affirmation that play games make you better surgeons, Vivian Redding is the new Villain of the Year of the Internet, and some lovely lawsuits against Blizzard. Then we hit a tangent about botting in games, and how there’s been similar concepts made by creative players. Games within games is fun, and we’ll probably see more of it. We invaded the Barcade with Xenon and Anniex0r, out here in Los Angeles, and had a blast. A chat about the concepts of skill vs. ‘grind,’ and skill vs. RMTs ties up the show, which is punctuated with Oizys whipping up his world-famous tourettes set!

WORLD OF WARCRAFT STAND UP COMEDY

It comes off a bit like a similar concept of someone reading, say, the Dungeon Master’s Guide for Dungeons and Dragons, and then making up a skit off of an hours worth of reading, but he means well. Like, Warlocks need a lot of dexterity because they’re softies. At least the audience was receptive!

Anyone who plays in the 5v5 Ranked Arena season will be eligible for entry into a WORLDWIDE tournament. The sheer amount of people who can try to get into this is just totally epic. Anyone. That rules. MUST GET TO LEVEL 70!
