These guys are running a Live-Action Massively Multiplayer Game. Kind of a cool concept. More like a hack and slash then an actual RPG, since there’s little to no RP involved. Just kill people and collect their life coins!
TerraDrive
Their site is kinda cool; it’s run off a Wiki so the players can help develop the world.

Conventions on the brain. We’re deep in the trenches of ‘convention high season,’ having just been to Anime Expo, getting buzzed by E3, and now waiting for Comicon and Blizzcon. We give a bit of an E3 wrap up, going through some of the things that jumped out at us since last show, as well as a few stories and experiences from past Anime Expos. We discuss conventions in general, and then ponder about Anime licensing and the business models. Lastly, we take five and flex our game development muscles, and come up with some ideas for a game based around Conventions.

Q. What is Calamity Game?
A. The Calamity Game is a flash sandbox where you can set up scenes that unfold based on some simple laws of physics acting on a rag doll.

We dedicate this show to the memory of Mr Wizard, rest in peace. Blog like it’s the end of the world: Today was this day, where you blog like the world is under Zombie attack. This sparks a long discussion about games and the degree of player control allowed/given by the games themselves. Collaborative storytelling is as old as storytelling itself, so we take a look at various forms of it, including some of the conventions like user-driven rule enforcement. We come up with some examples of ‘live action’ gaming, like environments or amusement parks that set up scenarios you could play in. Imagine playing a reality game set in a broken down amusement park in the Halflife 2 setting. I also found the new 4400 ad campaign, where they set up some ‘in world’ or ‘in-lore’ blogs where they are studying plot elements of the shows universe. Very well done. Lastly we chat a bit about creating systems where your players are assigned random abilities vs. letting them choose their strengths and weaknesses.

This just peaked my internetometer. I would say my firefox just got a hardon but … well, that would be just wrong.
Was reading through a great article on Gamasutra entitled: SingStar’s Bozek On ‘Unbundling’ Games. On one side it’s great because it covers user-generated-content, microtransactions, and karaoke: three things I’m very interested in. But the real reason is this paragraph:
Using the feature, SingStar players will be able to capture and upload pictures and videos of themselves singing — something, Bozek said, the team was inspired to do after witnessing the sudden stardom of Gary Brolsma when his ‘Numa Numa’ performance was spread through Newgrounds and YouTube.
Nothing ‘new’ (we talked a lot about SingShot a while back) - but the fact game developers were inspired towards a more inclusive design by Gary Brolsma and the internet… makes me feel really warm and fuzzy.
Go Internetto! Fight Internetto! We’re ‘improving’ videogames!

Denis Dyack calls out the Big Game Industry, saying we need to change the conventions of marketing and how we promote games, even before they are done. We respond to his crazy-go-nuts rant with our own. One of our more academic and media-based discussions, so wear your thinking beanie. We also take a quick look at the newly-released Armory for World of Warcraft, and what happens once you remove some privacy in such a big game.
